Research shows kids are snacking too often and the foods they choose are too often salty snacks, candy, sweets and sweetened beverages, foods with too many calories and not enough nutrients. Pair this with the knowledge that children need to eat more fruit, vegetables, legumes, low fat dairy foods, and substitute whole grains for refined grains. Unfortunately too much snacking and too many calories from less-than-healthy snacks is one reason that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, about 17 percent of children and adolescents are obese.

From family events, to career meetings and all the way to meal planning, every day we are driven to make all sorts of decisions. Despite how challenging it is to have to make these choices, it’s important to recognize that making decisions doesn’t have to be a difficult and tiring, especially when it comes to meal planning.

Additionally, it’s equally important to be aware that better food choices can result in more nourishment for our bodies. The trick is to find satisfaction without going hungry or feeling deprived. We know it can be difficult to exercise a level of control over a box of favorite cookies or a pint of ice cream, which could result in an overload of calories at the end of the day. However, we need to remember that not just cookies, but anything eaten in excess can result in too many calories.

Does this mean we can’t have cookies and milk anymore? Of course not, ...

A recent study has confirmed previous research findings that the consumption of beverages sweetened with low-calorie sweeteners is associated with healthier diets and overall lower calorie consumption. The study, by Gibson et al., recently published in Nutrientssuggests that using low-calorie sweetened beverages can support a healthy eating pattern.

Break the word breakfast into its two parts: break and fast. Eating breakfast breaks your fast after hours of sleep. Breakfast is often the first meal of the day. It’s a nutritionally important one. Nutrition experts have touted the benefits of breakfast for years, especially for children of all ages. However, according to William Cochran, MD, a past member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition, “Approximately 8 to 12 percent of all school-aged kids skip breakfast. By the time kids enter adolescence, as many as 20 to 30 percent of them have completely given up the morning meal.
