Sugar SubstitutesWith increasing obesity rates many people today are watching their intake of added sugars. In fact, World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend getting less than 10% of your daily caloric intake from sugars – a level substantially lower than what most average people consume. Based on WHO guidelines, someone on an 1800 calorie diet should consume no more than 11 teaspoons of added sugar a day. Consider that one 12 fluid ounce can of some full sugar sodas contain 10 teaspoons of added sugar. To successfully make a change it is always important to know what is in the food you eat and your options. Similar to the WHO recommendation, one of the key recommendations of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to reduce our intake of added sugars to less than 10% of our total calories. The Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations from the American Heart Association also call for a reduction in added sugars intake to help lower your risk for developing heart disease.

The connection between certain foods and our emotions can be very strong. I know having carrot cake with cream cheese frosting puts the “happy” in my happy birthday celebration, but it isn’t the only way to put a smile on my face. Yet many of my clients have told me they find it difficult to cope with the ups and downs of everyday life without turning to sweet treats to lift their spirits.

If you’ve ever eaten your way through a sleeve of Girl Scout cookies to help you deal with a difficult situation, you know what I’m talking about. Whether it’s an overwhelming project at work or an extended to-do list at home, using food to “feed” your emotions can become an unhealthy habit.

All of the talk about resolutions to lose weight in the New Year seems to focus on adults who went overboard during the holidays - but what about teens and children? Don’t they celebrate right along with the rest of the family? Parents and other caregivers are role models for the lifestyle behaviors they’d like their children to adopt, so if parents are off track, their children probably are too. Maybe it’s time to refresh your entire family’s healthy eating and fitness goals to start the year off right!

I am not one to eavesdrop, but I do often stop and listen (very discreetly) when people are talking about food and nutrition issues, mainly in grocery stores. Sadly, more often than not, misinformation abounds. While myths about nutrition and its impact on health are widespread, two areas where I know consumers may not have all of the facts are: 1) carbohydrate-related, particularly what “low carb” means or does not mean, and 2) what the glycemic index (GI) is all about.

What exactly does “natural” mean when we see it on a food label? The dictionary says it means “existing in nature” or “not man-made,” but I see it printed across brightly colored boxes, bags and cans of food in the middle of the store containing products that you’ll never see “growing spontaneously, without being planted or tended by human hands,” which is another definition of natural!

One of the things that makes holidays so special is the food. Even though there is no law against roasting a turkey in February or baking sugar cookies in July, many of us rarely do. If you or a loved one has diabetes you, or they, have likely been encouraged to follow a “diabetic diet” or perhaps the term “diabetic diet plan” or even “diabetes meal plan” was used.
