Many years have passed since I went trick or treating. Things have changed. Plenty. We, as adults, are paying more attention to the healthfulness of the treats we hand out and serve at Halloween parties. While a smattering of uber-sugary treats are fine, a few go a long way. Halloween can still be a fun-filled holiday without all the sugar-filled treats.

Delicious desserts can still have a place in a healthful diet. In fact, there are simple ways to make traditional recipes a little healthier, including reducing the added sugar content. My family history of diabetes is no doubt the most important when it comes to my personal health. That’s why I try to eat like I have diabetes. No, I don’t have diabetes but one of the first lines of defense is eating a healthful diet. Although it has been many years, I still have memories of the very limited choices there were for my father when he was initially diagnosed. Today’s availability of no-calorie sweeteners has made eating much more enjoyable for me as well as my relatives who must restrict their intake of sugar-sweetened foods.

A tidal wave of nostalgia swept over me when I discovered a picture online of my favorite (and only) child-safe oven. What a find! Seeing the boxes of cake and cookie mixes and the small aluminum pans made me teary-eyed. It seems as if it was almost yesterday that I was “baking” my first cake in this tiny oven situated in Mom’s kitchen.
