Eating a healthy diet while pregnant is vitally important to both the development of the child and the mother. While it is important to get the right amount of certain nutrients during pregnancy, gaining too much weight can be detrimental and cause health issues such as gestational diabetes. That is why watching one's calorie intake is important, and needs to be guided by your Ob/Gyn practitioner or other health professional.

While there are many components to living a healthy lifestyle (e.g., proper diet, incorporating daily physical activity, maintaining appropriate body weight), a first step might be to reduce your intake of added sugars, particularly in the beverages you are consuming. Choosing healthier alternatives to high-sugar and high-fat beverages is an important first step.

In my 30+ years as a registered dietitian I can no longer recall the number of times I’ve had to remind a client, “I am a dietitian, not a magician.” That was my way of steering them away from magical thinking about weight loss and helping them focus on the lifestyle changes they needed to make to get the results they wanted, and to maintain them.

The history of weight loss is filled with outlandish diets and bizarre gimmicks that promise to “melt fat away” while you sleep. If only that were possible! But as I like to remind my clients, if any one of those crazy schemes really worked, there would be no need for the next one. While there is no magic bullet that can produce instant weight loss, there is a way to reach your goal weight without one.

By doing the math and reading the information on a food’s Nutrition Facts panel, you can quickly understand how reducing caloric intake  in small ways can add up quickly. World renowned obesity researcher Dr. John Foreyt (a professor at Baylor College of Medicine) has said that most people will never miss these 100 calories, and over the course of a year, eliminating them can result in a 5-10 lb. weight loss.

Far too often, people are heard commiserating that they don't have time or a place to exercise... and they just can't lose weight. Perhaps they are trying too hard or do not understand that you don't have to become a jogger or marathon runner or consume an overly-calorie-restricted diet to have a healthier lifestyle. One message that needs to be heard and embraced is this: Small changes in one's diet and activity level can indeed result in weight loss or help with preventing weight gain.

There’s nothing like a new calendar signaling the start of a brand new year to motivate us to lose the weight we may have gained during the holiday season. That must be why New Year’s Resolutions are so easy to make! But by the end of January the first big obstacle many of us will have to tackle is around the corner – parties to celebrate the Big Game. Fifteen years ago (1998), calorie-conscious consumers in the U.S. did not have the option of enjoying sucralose (the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® Sweetener Products) in prepared foods, beverages or as a no-calorie sweetener. No-calorie sweeteners were limited and not all had the ability to be used in cooking and baking without losing their sweet characteristics. But to the delight of calorie-counting consumers, in 1998, after extensive review of scientific research, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of sucralose in a wide variety of products.
